Out and about…
July 28, 2008Around the Conference…
July 23, 2008There’s plenty going on around the West Virginia Annual Conference.
Last week, I went up to the School of Christian Mission, sponsored by the United Methodist Women. One of my colleagues at the Conference Center told me that “School of Christian Mission is the single best educational piece we do.”
After seeing part of it for [...]
My friend Derick
July 22, 2008Think of this post as a combination of ‘Music Monday’ (on Tuesday), with a reflection on evangelism.
Derick Kirk was one of Charleston’s best musicians. He could play any instrument he picked up (much to the chagrin of his musical colleagues). He could play any style of music, from jazz to acid rock to [...]
Updates are a’comin’
July 21, 2008I have so much to write about…time to do it is the problem. But, that’s indicative of the good things going on in the Annual Conference.
This past Friday, I was in Buckhannon at the School of Christian Mission. This Thursday, I travel to Moorefield to see Judy Vetter and Asbury’s ministry there to [...]

Music Mondays: Come Sunday
July 14, 2008Next time you get the chance, open the United Methodist Hymnal to number 728. The composer and lyricist of Come Sunday is one of America’s great musical giants: Duke Ellington.
Come Sunday became famous for a couple of reasons:
It was part of a monumental work by Ellington, the Black, Brown, and Beige suite. Composed in [...]
Stay in Love With God
July 11, 2008When I think of God’s love, I see my dog…and begin to understand the depth of God’s love for humanity..
Finished up the third chapter of Rueben Job’s Three Simple Rules at lunch today. What’s sticking with me is Job’s emphasis on the question Christ asks Peter: “Do you love me?” He asks.
Ya’ll [...]
Do Good
July 10, 2008This piece was shot yesterday in Charleston, WV, down the street from where I live. I walk my dog past Celebration Station every day.
It’s next to Piedmont Elementary School in Charleston on the East End of the city. The playground was built 15 or so years ago and was a big accomplishment for [...]
