Anyone who knows me, knows I love music. Given the number of ‘hits’ the Eric Bibb post got a few weeks back, it seems that many of ya’ll do as well. Every Monday, Living Stones will feature a post about music. Any kind of music is on the table, as long as it falls under the mission of this blog: to tell stories about how we in the WV Annual Conference live out our faith in Christ.
We’ll start with my favorite band since 1979, U2
The video in this post highlights the tragic events of January 30, 1972, known as Bloody Sunday.
BTW, the British Government is in the middle of their second investigation of exactly what happened that day. 36 years later.
U2 has been writing songs about faith and struggle since they started out. A favorite song of mine has always been I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For from their 1987 smash album The Joshua Tree:
I believe in Kingdom Come
When all the colors will bleed into one
bleed into one
Yes, I’m still running
You broke the bonds and
Loosed the chains
carried the cross of my shame
of my shame
You know I believe it
Bono, the band’s lead singer has been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize several times, largely for his work in/for Africa.
Figuring out Bono can be tough. He has never stood on the street corner and shouted out his faith to the masses. He has said that I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For is “a song as much about doubt as it is faith.” My thought on that is simple: How can there be faith without it?
He’s never been afraid, though to take a stand.
Below is a pic of a mural by the Bogside Artists depicting Father Daly waving a white handkerchief while trying to escort the mortally wounded Jackie Duddy to safety during Bloody Sunday.
